Nd:YAG laser
The Nd:YAG laser is a powerful and versatile laser that penetrates deep into the skin without damaging the surface. Ideal for hair removal, vascular treatments, pigmentation, and skin tightening.

Nd:YAG laser
The Nd:YAG laser is a versatile, powerful laser technology widely used in the medical and aesthetic fields. The abbreviation stands for Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet, a crystal that emits light with a wavelength of 1064 nm. Thanks to this relatively long wavelength, the energy can penetrate deeply into the skin without damaging the epidermis. This makes the Nd:YAG laser particularly suitable for treatments such as ontharen, couperose, pigment disorders, skin tightening and even removing tattoos.
On this page you can read exactly what an Nd:YAG laser is, how it works and what applications it has in a professional practice.
What is an Nd:YAG laser?
An Nd:YAG laser is a type of solid-state laser that uses an Nd:YAG crystal as its medium. Its standard wavelength of 1064 nm allows it to treat deeper skin structures, including blood vessels and hair follicles. Its absorption properties in water and hemoglobin make it ideal for Stroke and pigment treatments, even for dark skin types.
Benefits of an Nd:YAG laser
- Deep penetration without damage on the skin surface
- Suitable for high skin types (Fitzpatrick IV-VI)
- Versatile in use: from vascular problems to hair removal and skin tightening
- Can be used in combination with other wavelengths or treatments
- Reliable results at various indications
Types of Nd:YAG lasers
Q-switched Nd:YAG laser
Q-switched lasers They deliver energy in very short, powerful pulses (nanoseconds) and are primarily used for pigmentation problems, tattoo removal, and skin rejuvenation. The rapid energy release breaks down pigments into small particles, which are then eliminated by the body.
Pulsed Nd:YAG laser
This version uses longer pulse durations and is often used for hair removal, vascular lesions, and skin tightening. The longer pulses allow for more controlled heat output, which is important for selective thermolysis.
Nd:YAG picosecond laser
Picosecond lasers These are advanced versions of Q-switched systems and operate with even shorter pulses. They are particularly effective for difficult-to-remove tattoos and improving skin texture.
1064nm Nd:YAG laser systems
All of the above-mentioned types operate at the fundamental 1064 nm wavelength. Some systems combine this with other wavelengths (such as 532 nm) for broader applicability. 1064 nm is known for its deep penetration and safety on darker skin types.

For which indications is an Nd:YAG laser suitable?
Nd:YAG laser hair removal
By absorbing into the melanin of the hair follicle, but not into the epidermis, this laser is ideal for hair removal on dark skin types.
Nd:YAG laser tattoo removal
Q-switched and picosecond systems are very effective in removing black and dark tattoos without damaging the surrounding skin.
Nd:YAG laser couperose treatment
The 1064 nm wavelength is well absorbed by hemoglobin, allowing it to effectively coagulate superficial and deeper vessels.
Nd:YAG laser wavelength properties
- 1064 nm: Deep penetration, low absorption in melanin (safe for dark skin types), high absorption in hemoglobin and water
- 532 nm (optional on some systems): Effective for superficial pigment and vascular lesions
- Nd:YAG systems can also fractional or with special handpieces can be supplied for additional applications such as skin rejuvenation.
FAQ
The laser penetrates deep into the skin and selectively heats blood vessels, pigment cells, or hair follicles. Depending on the setting, thermal damage is caused to the target tissue, leading to tissue breakdown or stimulation of tissue repair.
Because of their combination of safety, effectiveness, and versatility, they are suitable for many indications, including more difficult skin types, and can be safely used on various parts of the body.
For darker skin types, the Nd:YAG laser is considered the safest. For lighter skin types, Alexandrite– or diode lasers. The choice depends on skin type, hair color, and thickness.
Diode lasers typically have shorter wavelengths (800–810 nm) and are often more effective for lighter skin types. Nd:YAG is safer for darker skin and penetrates deeper.
Alexandrite lasers (755 nm) are very effective for fair skin types and fine hair, but less safe for darker skin. Nd:YAG is more widely applicable and safer for all skin types.
Costs vary depending on the indication and clinic. A session for hair removal or vascular treatment typically costs between €100 and €300. Tattoo removal is generally more expensive and requires multiple sessions.
Yes, especially the 1064 nm wavelength makes this type of laser safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types, including IV-VI.
For most applications, 1064 nm is most effective due to its depth of penetration and safety. For more superficial pigment or vessel markings, 532 nm may be more effective.
