The KTP laser is a precision laser that effectively treats superficial vascular problems such as rosacea and redness. Thanks to its 532 nm wavelength, this is done safely and precisely, with minimal skin damage.

KTP laser

A KTP laser is a precision laser used in medical and aesthetic practice for treating vascular lesions , such as couperose, spider nevi, and superficial redness.

The KTP laser emits a specific wavelength of 532 nm, which is optimally absorbed by oxyhemoglobin (blood). This allows for targeted treatment of blood vessels with minimal damage to the surrounding skin. Thanks to its precision, limited penetration depth, and low risk of pigment shifts, this type of laser is particularly suitable for superficial vascular indications.

On this page you can read what a KTP laser is, when to use it and which questions are frequently asked.

What is a KTP laser?

KTP stands for Potassium Titanyl Phosphate. This solid-state laser generates a green laser beam with a wavelength of 532 nm. This wavelength makes the KTP laser particularly suitable for superficial vascular lesions. The absorption profile of this laser makes it ideal for treating superficial red discoloration without damaging the surrounding tissue. The short pulse durations enable selective photothermolysis with minimal thermal damage.

Advantages of this type of laser

  • Specific absorption by oxyhemoglobin: very effective for superficial vascular problems
  • Short pulse durations: precise energy delivery without overheating surrounding tissue
  • Minimal recovery time due to limited penetration depth
  • Low risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
  • Very suitable before and after, use in the face and neck
  • Often cmore comfortable treatment compared to wider light sources such as IPL

For which indications is a KTP laser suitable?

KTP laser couperose treatment

Couperose (telangiectasia) is dilated capillaries in the face that are visible as redness. The KTP laser can target these capillaries, with quickly visible results and without damaging the skin structure.

KTP laser rosacea treatment

Erythematous rosacea often presents with diffuse redness and visible blood vessels. The KTP laser can help reduce this redness as part of a treatment plan, provided the indication is limited to the superficial blood vessels.

Other vascular indications

  • Spider neavi
  • Cherry angiomas
  • Spotty erythema
  • Post-inflammatory redness

Frequently asked questions

The KTP laser operates at 532 nm and targets superficial vascular structures. The VBeam (Pulsed Dye Laser) operates at 585–595 nm and penetrates deeper into the skin, making it more suitable for larger or deeper vessels. Both systems have their own advantages depending on the indication and skin type.

A KTP laser emits light at a single, precise wavelength (532 nm), whereas IPL uses broadband light with multiple wavelengths. This makes the KTP laser more targeted and often more effective for superficial vascular abnormalities. IPL, on the other hand, is more versatile but less selective.

The KTP laser is a highly effective method for treating rosacea. In most cases, one to three treatments are sufficient for a visible result. The effectiveness depends on the depth and density of the blood vessels and the skin type.

For superficial redness (erythematous rosacea), a KTP laser is often more effective than IPL because the energy is delivered more selectively and precisely. For deeper redness or combined indications, IPL or an Nd:YAG laser may also be suitable.
